Mantis™ – Titanium Armor Plate
Description Mantis™ Titanium Armor Plate Level III or III plates are typically of either ceramic-composite or steel construction, and some would say that the debate over which type is superior has never been decisively settled. Steel armor is sometimes preferred for its superior toughness and multi-hit capability. Yet ceramic armor has a vastly superior performance-to-weight ratio and doesn’t share steel body armor’s vulnerability to high-velocity threats such as the 5.56x45mm M193. No matter what type of plate you choose, some compromise will, necessarily, be involved. Until now. The new Mantis™ Titanium Armor Plate, from Adept, is body armor for those who will accept no compromises. Crafted from a forged, multi-curved titanium alloy plate securely bonded to a high-performance polyethylene backer, the Mantis™ Titanium Armor Plate offers the toughness and multi-hit capability of steel body armor, while exhibiting the weight and performance characteristics you’d expect of ceramic armor. At just 5.45 pounds for full RF2 protection, the Mantis is the apotheosis of metal-faced body armor. It offers the best of both worlds, and the best possible combination of properties such as toughness, absolute performance, multi-hit performance, and weight. Test Shoot 1. .44Magnum, ~1400 fps2. 9mm solid copper (SCS), ~1600 fps3. 5.56x45mm M193, 3350 fps4. 50 grain .22-250, 4256 fps5. 5.56x45mm M855, 3150 fps6. 7.62x51mm M80 Ball, ~2700 fps No Penetrations. Minimal BFD. Superior multi-hit performance and durability. Multi-curved to military SAPI specifications. All-around performance — stopping M193, M855, M80 Ball, 7.62x39mm MSC, and more — all at full velocity. Extreme toughness and durability, capable of withstanding tremendous abuse without compromising performance. High-strength monolithic titanium strike-face yields upon ballistic impact, minimizing front-face spall; rounds are stopped inside the plate, rather than on its surface. Integral trauma pad: Comfortable and durable thermoplastic foam on body side. Martial aesthetic. This plate is not covered in drab nylon, nor is it coated in truck-bed liner, for it simply doesn’t need to be. This is, for the first time in the modern era, body armor that looks like body armor. Patent pending. Frequently Asked Questions Why choose titanium over ceramic or steel? TItanium-UHMWPE hybrid construction defeats all RF2 threats — and also does quite well against fragments. The Mantis was developed as a military-issue plate for soldiers that are likely to experience fragment threats or rough conditions that might degrade ceramic-faced plates; most fragments will not penetrate the Ti layer or degrade the plate. Does the yielding face eliminate front‑face spall? Yes — high energy small-arms projectiles are caught inside the plate rather than fragmenting outward. What rifle threats are covered? The Mantis stops M855, M80 Ball, M193, and 7.62×39 MSC at rated velocities. It also does remarkably well against high-energy hunting calibers, such as .270 Win and .22-250. Is an external coating required? No; titanium’s corrosion resistance means no sealant is required. How thick is the plate? Only 0.7 inch, slimmer than most examples of Level 3 armor.
